Program Director and Founder
James has been the Aquatics Director at Union Avenue Community Fitness Center since March of 2017.
Prior to working at Union Avenue Coach James coached for the Pine Bush Piranha’s since 2013, he spent 2 years as the Assistant Head Coach and 1 year as the Head Coach. Coach James began swimming competitively at age five, and joined the Pine Bush Piranha’s at age 10 when his family moved to Pine Bush from Brooklyn, NY. Coach James swam with the Piranha’s until he graduated high school as well as being a member of the boys’ varsity swim team.
Coach James began teaching swimming with they tiny tots program at age 15 and began filling in as a coach for the Pine Bush Piranhas his junior year of high school. He continued filling in as a coach throughout his early 20’s. Coach James joined the NYC Fire Department in 2008 and subsequently moved to Mount Vernon, NY.
While living in Mount Vernon Coach James became the head coach of the Mount Vernon YMCA Water Dragons in 2009. In 2011 Coach James also became the Aquatics Director for the Mount Vernon YMCA, rebuilding and maintaining the YMCA’s learn to swim program. While working at the YMCA Coach James became an American Red Cross Life Guard Instructor, and began running lifeguarding classes at the YMCA. Coach James worked at the Mount Vernon YMCA until the YMCA closed its main building and aquatics program in 2012.
Coach James and his wife Devon live in Marlboro, NY and have three children who swim at Union Avenue, Thomas, Ian, and now Madalynn. Coach James is extremely grateful to be able to help grow and foster the team that he started at Union Avenue.
